About Orla

I grew up on a farm in Co. Donegal in Ireland and food was a huge part of my life; from my granny’s home-grown vegetables and delicious scone breads, to my mum’s homemade soup and apple tarts.
Later, I studied marketing and worked in a very fast paced and chaotic environment, which resulted in a pretty poor diet of processed foods and lots of carbs. It was on my last employment contract that stress became overwhelming and problematic to my health, as I was then diagnosed with IBS and cyclic vomiting.
I completely changed my lifestyle and eating habits when I completed a Masters in personalised nutrition because I now understood the effect our food choices, our environments and our relationships have on our ability to achieve health, prevent chronic illness and improve the life in our years.
As a result, in 2016 I set up Health by Orla to empower people to transform their health by knowing the right nutrients for them and/or their children.

Better Gut Health

When we think of gut health we only think about symptoms like bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis among others; we rarely think about things like depression, anxiety, autism, ADHD and other autoimmune conditions that affect our mental health. And why would you? Depression or eczema have nothing to do with the gut! This is where you’re wrong and this is why our digestive health is so important for our overall health.  

As a society we are eagerly awaiting that ‘one thing’, that ‘magic pill’ to come along and effortlessly deliver us to our destination of desired health. Unfortunately, the wait is unending and the results, poor at best. However, the power to restore balance and health in your body, particularly your gut, is a lot closer than you might think. Our bodies are designed to keep us healthy, energised and strong, if we nourish them with the right nutrition. This is the key to my Better Guts Programme; finding out the right nutrition for you and your gut health, so that you CAN arrive at your destination of better health and happily live there

There is not just one event that causes ill-health but instead, a series of events that accumulate to create the ‘perfect storm’ for developing a condition or a set of symptoms. In Functional Medicine, these series of events are referred to as triggers and they range from infections, a traumatic/stressful event, food allergies or environmental toxins. Each of these cause a reaction within the body which impacts upon a gland, tissues, an organ (heart, lung, kidney..) or an entire system (gastrointestinal, immune, cardiovascular and so forth.) Quite often it isn’t just one trigger but a series of triggers that impacts upon your health and moves you away from health towards ill-health and dis-ease

I work with clients to assess and remove these triggers, identify the best nutrients for them and help them move along the continuum towards health. This level of change takes dedication, time and commitment from both the client and the practitioner and a package structure provides this framework..
